Wir entwickeln uns weiter von «Food for Philippines» (FFP) zu «MIND-Food for Philippines»… Was heisst das?
Weihnachtszeit, Zeit der Solidarität, «Jede Hilfe zählt – jetzt spenden und helfen…» gilt auch für uns! Unser Verein/unsere Hilfsorganisation FOOD FOR PHILIPPINES (FFP) hat noch immer das Ziel Notleidende auf den Philippinen zu unterstützen und insbesondere Gelder für Nahrungsmittel sowie gebrauchte Kleider und Cellphones zu sammeln um diese dann in Elendsvierteln zu verteilen. Wir haben dir immer wieder von unseren Aktionen berichtet und Rechenschaft über die Verwendung unserer Mittel abgelegt. Auf unserem Tätigkeitsfeld hat sich im Laufe der noch jungen Geschichte unseres Vereins viel getan. Zum einen scheinen Corona und die Pandemie-Jahre, welche für uns ausschlaggebend waren FFP zu gründen, überwunden (oder besser: nicht mehr haltbar…) zu sein. Andererseits bleibt die permanente Not auf den Philippinen durch Ueberschwemmungen, Taifune, Vulkanausbrüche und sogar Erdbeben bestehen. Auch die geopolitischen Verhältnisse und die strukturelle Armut der Philippinen sind unwägbare, schlimm kombinierte Faktoren, welche die Entwicklung des Landes zum Besseren in weite Ferne rücken. Die «neue» (Marcos-) Regierung bringt kein Abrücken von der leider bewährten autoritären Herrschaft mit Unterdrückung der Meinungsfreiheit und angeblichem Krieg gegen Drogen. Im weltweiten Failed State-Ranking figurieren die Philippinen im vordersten Drittel der Nationen, Tendenz verschlimmert. Es kommen in dramatischer Weise die Folgen des Ukraine-Kriegs und anderer Weltkrisen dazu, nicht zuletzt das weltweite drastische Ansteigen der Kosten für Nahrung und Energie sowie die gleichzeitige Zunahme der Arbeitslosigkeit. Das World Food Programme (WFP), die Welternährungsorganisation der Vereinten Nationen, spricht von einer fürchterlichen Verschärfung der Hungersituation auf der Welt, natürlich v.a. in den ärmsten Ländern, so – als leider nur eines von vielen – den Philippinen (siehe https://www.wfp.org/global-hunger-crisis).
Der springende Punkt für uns (FFP) ist nun, dass es unter der beschriebenen verschärften Situation weniger Sinn macht, wie Wasser auf den heissen Stein weiterhin Food und Kleider zu sammeln und an die Ärmsten zu verteilen: Das war als Akuthilfe (und erst recht wenn man Leute in der Nachbarschaft verhungern sieht…) gerechtfertigt, ist aber nicht nachhaltig.
Wir haben deshalb beschlossen, unsere Sammel- und Hilfsaktionen auf ausgewählte mittellose Jugendliche zu fokussieren und diesen per Schulgeldzahlung und sonstige Ausbildungszuwendungen Schule und Studium zu ermöglichen. Unsere künftigen Aktivitäten werden sich also statt wie bisher nur auf «Food for Philippines» vor allem auf «Mind-Food for Philippines» richten. Hier unser neuer Slogan bzw. unser neues Logo, das unser Bestreben ausdrücken soll, künftig mehr in geistige Nahrung und Ausbildungskapazitäten zu investieren:
Das philippinische Bildungssystem liegt nämlich im Argen und bietet insbesondere Kindern aus armen Familien kaum Chancen höhere Schulen zu besuchen. Die Hürden sind das unerschwingliche Schulgeld und der Zwang, nach der Grundschule baldmöglichst einen casual Job zu finden. Während der Corona-/Pandemiejahre stellten v.a. die staatlichen Ausbildungsstätten ihren Betrieb ein, die SchülerInnen mussten zuhause bleiben und blieben abgesehen von nicht funktionierendem Home-Schooling sich selber überlassen, wenn nicht auf seltene private Förderung zurück gegriffen werden konnte. Umso mehr glauben wir, einige wenige Kinder mit Hilfe auch deiner Spende privilegieren und ihnen eine nachhaltige Ausbildung finanzieren zu können.
Bereits haben wir fünf uns sehr gut bekannte und geeignet erscheinende Jugendliche/Kinder für unser FFP Schulförderprogramm selektioniert und stellen sie dir hier kurz vor. Um den Persönlichkeitsschutz zu gewährleisten, haben wir ihre Namen verändert:
Nun bitten wir dich eindringlich um weitere und möglichst regelmässige Spenden für FFP und insbesondere eben für unser neues FFP Schulförderprogramm «MIND-Food for Philippines»! Der Fokus ist vorläufig auf die Förderung der fünf vorgestellten Kinder/Jugendlichen gerichtet, etwelche Mehreinnahmen würden wie bis anhin für weitere Food Verteilungsaktionen eingesetzt. Bisher konnte ja nach jedem Eingang von ca. CHF 1'000.- Spenden jeweils eine Food Delivery-Aktion durchgeführt werden. Es ist auch möglich und sogar sehr erwünscht, dass du eine Patenschaft eines Kindes/Jugendlichen quasi fest übernimmst! Wie weit das gehen würde, bliebe allein dir überlassen. FFP würde dann den Kontakt vermitteln und alles Nötige veranlassen. Und selbstverständlich garantieren wir weiterhin volle Transparenz unserer Spendeneinnahmen und unserer detaillierten Ausgaben entsprechend dem gewünschten Verwendungszweck. Es gibt natürlich auch Regeln. So werden die Aufwendungen für jede(n) SchülerIn genau abgewogen und registriert – und Förderung gibt’s nur, wenn die jeweilige Ausbildung auch tatsächlich erfolgreich abgeschlossen wird.
Ergänzung FAQ’s Dezember 2022: Was hat es mit der Erweiterung unserer FFP-Aktionen um den Bereich "mind-blowing MIND-Food for Philippines auf sich?
Allein Nahrung an Hunger leidende Bedürftige zu verteilen, erschien uns frustrierend, mindestens aber nicht nachhaltig. Es gibt unzählige Bedürftige in unzähligen Squatter Areas. Bringt man in einer Squatter Aera Care Pacs (in der Regel einmalig weniger als 5 kg Lebensmittel pro Familie), so lindert dies die Not nur sehr punktuell und bestenfalls eine Woche lang. Danach müssen sich die Locals wieder andere Quellen erschliessen (Schulden machen, gratis Kokosnüsse, Bananen essen…). Demgegenüber erleben wir in unserem Umfeld schlaue Jugendliche, die lernwillig sind und sich eine Existenz erschaffen wollen, aber das nötige Schulgeld nicht aufbringen können. Sie brauchen nachhaltige mind-blowing «MIND-Food», das heisst geistige und bildungsmässige Nahrung, an der sie wachsen und mit der sie ihre Karriere-Ziele verfolgen können. Fünf von ihnen, Nicole, Arvin, Noah, Tala and Elias haben wir als «Candidates» ausgewählt und vorgestellt und wollen sie in ihrer ganz eigenen Schule und ihrem ganz eigenen Studium begleiten und unterstützen – wenn immer möglich bis zur erfolgreichen Berufsergreifung und Selbständigkeit. Das braucht Konstanz, dauert Jahre und braucht permanente finanzielle Unterstützung. Von daher suchen wir dringend Sponsoren, welche nicht nur einmalig spenden, sondern sogar bereit sind, eine (Teil-) Patenschaft, eine sogenannte Scholarship zu übernehmen. FFP würde sehr gerne die Vermittlung übernehmen, die Einhaltung einiger Regeln überwachen und selbstverständlich regelmässige Rechenschaft ablegen. Der/die SponsorIn entscheidet natürlich individuell, wie intensiv die Unterstützung und Betreuung sein soll und ob es um spontane einmalige «Giesskannen-» oder um regelmässige personalisierte Zuwendungen gehen soll. Auch hier zählt nicht nur jeder Peso, sondern auch jedwedes persönliche Engagement und jede Motivation über das Materielle hinaus. «Wir finden schon eine Lösung…! Weil, was wäre die Alternative?!»
Gerne darfst du uns deinen Kommentar zur weiteren Ausrichtung unserer Hilfsorganisation zusenden. Wir sind ja schliesslich ein offizieller Verein und falls du Mitglied bist, hast du natürlich das Recht auf Einflussnahme – v.a. wenn an den Statuten etwas geändert wird. Nimm aber bitte zur Kenntnis, dass unser Administrativaufwand bereits sehr hoch ist (und mit dem neuen «MIND-Food»-Projekt noch einmal steigt…) und übrigens meistens nur von mir alleine getragen und erledigt wird, aber ich will ja nicht jammern… 😉. Von daher bitte ich weiterhin um Vertrauen – und um Nachsicht, dass unsere Homepage nicht immer und in allem up to date ist.

We are evolving from "Food for Philippines" (FFP) to "MIND-Food for Philippines"... What does that mean?
Christmas time, time of solidarity, "Every help counts - donate and help NOW..." is also valid for us! Our association/our relief organization FOOD FOR PHILIPPINES (FFP) still has the goal to support people in need in the Philippines and especially to collect money for food as well as used clothes and cellphones to distribute them in squatter areas. We have always reported to you about our actions and given an account of the use of our funds. First of all, we would like to thank you once again for your support!
On our field of activity a lot has happened in the course of the still young history of our association. On the one hand, Corona and the pandemic years, which were decisive for us to found FFP, seem to be overcome (or better: no longer tenable...). On the other hand, the permanent hardship in the Philippines due to floods, typhoons, volcanic eruptions and even earthquakes remains. Also, the geopolitical conditions and the structural poverty of the Philippines are imponderable, badly combined factors that make the country's development for the better a distant prospect. The "new" (Marcos) government brings no departure from the unfortunately proven authoritarian rule with suppression of freedom of expression and alleged war on drugs. In the worldwide Failed State Ranking, the Philippines figures in the top third of nations, and the trend is worsening. The consequences of the war in Ukraine and other world crises, not least the drastic increase in the cost of food and energy worldwide and the simultaneous rise in unemployment, are added to this in a dramatic way. The World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, speaks of a terrible worsening of the hunger situation in the world, of course especially in the poorest countries, such as - unfortunately only one of many - the Philippines (see https://www.wfp.org/global-hunger-crisis).
The point for us (FFP) is now that it makes less sense under the described aggravated situation, like water on the hot stone to continue to collect food and clothes and distribute to the poorest: This was justified as acute aid (and even more so when you see people starving in your neighborhood...), but is not sustainable.
We have therefore decided to focus our collection and aid activities on selected destitute young people and to enable them to attend school and university by paying school fees and other educational grants. Our future activities will therefore focus on "Mind-Food for Philippines" instead of just "Food for Philippines" as before. Here is our new slogan or logo to express our effort to invest more in mind food and educational capacity in the future:
After all, the Philippine education system is in disrepair and offers especially children from poor families hardly any chances to attend higher schools. The obstacles are the prohibitively high school fees and the need to find a casual job as soon as possible after finishing elementary school. During the Corona/Pandemic years, the state-run educational institutions in particular ceased operations, the students had to stay at home and, apart from non-functioning home schooling, were left to fend for themselves unless they could fall back on rare private sponsorship. All the more we believe to be able to privilege a few children with the help of your donation and to finance a sustainable education for them.
We have already selected five young people/children who we know very well and who seem to be suitable for our FFP school sponsorship program and we would like to introduce them to you briefly here. In order to protect their privacy, we have changed their names:

Now we ask you urgently for further and preferably regular donations for FFP and especially for our new FFP school support program "MIND-Food for Philippines"! For the time being, the focus is on the promotion of the five children/youths presented, any additional income would be used as before for further food distribution campaigns. So far, after each receipt of about CHF 1'000.- donations, a food delivery action could be carried out. It is also possible and even very desirable that you take over a sponsorship of a child/youth! How far this would go, would be up to you alone. FFP would then mediate the contact and arrange everything necessary. And of course we still guarantee full transparency of our donation income and our detailed expenses according to the desired purpose. There are rules, of course. For example, the expenses for each student are carefully weighed and registered - and funding is only given if the respective training is actually completed successfully.
Supplement FAQ's December 2022: What is the extension of our FFP actions to include "mind-blowing MIND-Food for Philippines?
Distributing food to hungry needy people alone seemed frustrating, or at least unsustainable. There are countless needy people in countless squatter areas. Bringing Care Pacs (usually one time less than 5 kg of food per family) to a squatter aera only alleviates the need very selectively and at best for one week. After that, the locals have to find other sources again (incurring debts, eating free coconuts, bananas...). On the other hand, we experience in our environment smart young people who are willing to learn and want to create an existence for themselves, but cannot afford the necessary school fees. They need sustainable mind-blowing "MIND-Food", i.e. intellectual and educational food on which they can grow and with which they can pursue their career goals. We have selected and introduced five of them, Nicole, Arvin, Noah, Tala and Elias as "Candidates" and want to accompany and support them in their very own school and their very own studies - whenever possible until they successfully take up a profession and become independent. This needs constancy, takes years and needs permanent financial support. Therefore, we are urgently looking for sponsors who are not only willing to make a one-time donation, but who are also willing to take over a (partial) sponsorship/scholarship. FFP would be very happy to act as an intermediary, to monitor compliance with some rules and, of course, to provide regular accountability. The sponsor of course decides individually how intensive the support and care should be and whether it should be a spontaneous one-time "watering can" or regular personalized donations. Here, too, not only every Peso counts, but also every personal commitment and every motivation beyond the material. "We'll find a solution...! Because, what would be the alternative?!"
Feel free to send us your comments on the future direction of our charity. After all, we are an official association and if you are a member, you have of course the right to influence - especially if something is changed in the statutes. But please note that our administrative effort is already very high (and with the new "MIND-Food"-project it will increase even more...) and by the way it is mostly carried and done by myself alone, but I don't want to complain... 😉. Therefore, I ask for your trust - and for your indulgence that our homepage is not always and in everything up to date.
